RO Water filter competition

and the winner is....

Before I say who the winners.....yes winners are I would like to thank Happygeorge for arranging the competition and of course Vyair for very generously donating the prizes.

If you are in the market for a new RO unit please give their website a vist by clicking the link below.

Image

Ok over to the good stuff, the kind people at Vyair could not decide between two of the entries so they just decided to give out two prizes.

The two winners will each get 50gpd 4 stage RO unit, all fittings, spare filters and a digital TDS meter. In addition one will get an RO-50MP unit with a built in pump because their water pressure isn't really enough to effectively drive the unit.

Prize winner:

Dayzofspeed, you will get a pumped 50gpd 4 stage RO unit, all fittings, spare filters and a digital TDS meter.

Prize winner:

Fishyfishy55599, you will get a 50gpd 4 stage RO unit, all fittings, spare filters and a digital TDS meter.

All we ask in return for these prizes if you do us a little write up review of them so we can post it on the website as help promote Vyair for their donations.

I would like to congratulate the winners and to all those who entered but did not win there will be other competitions.

We will post the winning entries in the competition section for other members amusement.

Again thanks to Happygeorge and Vyair for their very generous donation for this competition.

Scientists find fossil of ancient sea monster

Image
ANCHORAGE, Alaska — Alaska scientists have discovered the fossil of a rare, prehistoric marine reptile that is likely the most complete remnant of the creature ever found in North America.

The nearly complete fossilized skeleton is of a thalattosaur, a long-tailed sea creature that plied warm, shallow waters in the early days of dinosaurs and became extinct at the end of the Triassic period some 200 million years ago.

The discovery of the fossil, found during an extreme low tide along the shore of the Tongass National Forest, was announced this week by the Museum of the North at the University of Alaska, Fairbanks.

"We were just having our morning coffee out on the outcropping when somebody said, 'What's that?'" Jim Baichtal, the U.S. Forest Service's Tongass geologist and part of the discovery team, said on Thursday.

Geologists had been conducting field surveys at the site when the fossil was spotted.

Unlike most thalattosaur discoveries, which are fossilized remnants of individual bones and bone fragments, this specimen appeared to be a nearly full skeleton.

"In North America, this may be the most articulated specimen that we have right now," Baichtal said.

Scientists excavated the fossil in June and have been studying it to determine whether it represents a previously unknown species.

There are only about a dozen full thalattosaur specimens in the world, Baichtal said. "So the probability of this being something that wasn't seen before is probably pretty high," he said.

Fish store database

Image
SaltyTank would like to announce its newest feature, our Fish shop database.

You are now able to search by location, shop name and postcode, enabling you to locate stores in your area and read other peoples comments about their experiences with the shop. So for example, if you are looking for fish shops in the Surrey area, enter Surrey in the search box and it will return all shops located within the Surrey area, or if you want to narrow it down a bit to say the town of Croydon, just search for Croydon. The same applies for postcode, if you want to see if there are any shops in your postcode area search by the first three digits of your postcode, for example CR0.

It will also tell you information you may need to know before visiting, stock, opening times, website, directions and if there is parking.

At the moment there is just a hand full of shops in the database but we are adding more and more each day.

You can access the shop database by this Link

If you would like to suggest a shop that is not in the database or if you are the shop owner and would like it listed please do so via this form

Ocean Warming Detrimental To Inshore Fish Species

Image
Tasmania, Australia -- The findings of a study published today in Nature Climate Change indicate negative effects on the growth of a long-lived south-east Australian and New Zealand inshore species – the banded morwong.

Scientific monitoring since 1944 by CSIRO at Maria Island, off the east coast of Tasmania, showed that surface water temperatures in the Tasman Sea have risen by nearly 2°C over the past 60 years. This warming, one of the most rapid in the southern hemisphere oceans, is due to globally increasing sea-surface temperatures and local effects caused by southward extension of the East Australian Current.

"Generally, cold-blooded animals respond to warming conditions by increasing growth rates as temperatures rise," CSIRO marine ecologist Dr Ron Thresher, a co-author of the study with colleagues from the University of Tasmania's Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies, said.

"But theory and laboratory studies show that this has a limit. As temperatures get too high, we begin to see increased signs of stress, possibly eventually leading to death. We are looking at whether climate change is beginning to push fish past their physiological limits.

I have the skimmer but I'm waiting for a sump before using it - but these are planned additions for the near future along with improved lighting and I plan on having a refugium with a deep sandbed in my sump once its constructed. I have been very keen on setting this tank up on a budget and thats probably why i enjoy doing things slowly. My tank is filled with salted RO water that I purchase from my LFS but do plan to get an RO unit sometime in the future.
